C.H.I. Overhead around Clark County
A C.H.I. door on a Clark County house most likely arrived as part of a door company's install, because C.H.I. sells through dealers and its dealer locator lists showrooms in Vancouver.
C.H.I. Overhead Doors has built residential and commercial garage doors from 1981. Its steel doors are made primarily from Nucor steel, and its full-view doors from aluminum, across ten residential collections from raised panel to overlay carriage house.
We work on C.H.I. doors independently of those showrooms. We read the model number, order matching sections through supply, and size springs and drums for the door as it hangs today, including the heavy overlay designs.
Is it a C.H.I. Overhead? How to check
A C.H.I. door is easiest to pin down by its four-digit model number, which tells you far more than the panel style alone.
- A four-digit model number on the paperwork or a door label. On raised panel and stamped carriage models in C.H.I.'s model tables, the last two digits follow the build: 50 is uninsulated single-skin steel, 51 adds polystyrene with a vinyl back, 83 is polystyrene between two steel skins, and 16 or 06 is polyurethane.
- The first digits name the style: 22 and 42 for short and long raised panels, 52 and 59 for stamped carriage house doors, 53 to 58 for overlay carriage doors.
- Faux woodgrain overlays on a thick two-sided steel section, the look of the Shoreline 5602.
- Aluminum rail and stile sections held together with through bolts, which marks a C.H.I. full-view door.
C.H.I. Overhead models in local garages
These C.H.I. models are on the current list, grouped the way the model numbers group them.
| Model | Sold | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Raised panel 2250 to 2216 and 4250 to 4216 | Current | Short and long raised panels, mostly in 2 inch sections, from uninsulated single-skin 2250 to polyurethane 2216 at R-17.19. The 2283 is polystyrene between two steel skins at R-9.65. |
| Stamped carriage house 5250 to 5916 | Current | Carriage designs stamped into steel in short and long panels, uninsulated through polyurethane at R-16.55. Light for a carriage look, because nothing is applied to the face. |
| Overlay carriage house 5300 to 5800 | Current | Two-sided 27 gauge steel under overlays of steel, wood or fiberglass, polystyrene on the 5300 to 5500 and polyurethane on the 5600 to 5800. C.H.I. notes these weigh more than doors without overlays. |
| Shoreline 5602 | Current | 2-1/2 inch two-sided steel with polyurethane at R-17.54 and faux woodgrain finishes, a heavy section that calls for springs sized by weight, not by door size. |
| Full-view aluminum 3295 and 3297 | Current | Aluminum rail and stile sections, hollow rails on the 3295 and polystyrene-insulated rails on the 3297, with frosted, obscure, plain or tinted glass. |
| Planks, Sterling and Skyline flush | Current | Contemporary steel collections; Sterling comes in 35 colors, which makes the color code essential when ordering a section. |
Common C.H.I. Overhead problems and repairs
Here are the C.H.I. problems we fix, matched to the repair page for each one.
-
A dented raised panel or stamped carriage section
We read the model number, design, width and color, order the section through supply, and hang it on a return visit with new hinges on that section. Garage Door Panel Replacement, from $445
-
A broken spring on a heavy overlay or Shoreline door
The scale reading sets the spring size, and before winding we make sure the drums and lift cables can handle that load. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $245
-
A loose or split overlay board on a carriage door
We reset or replace the overlay where the maker supplies it, or replace the whole section, and recheck balance afterward because overlays change the door weight. Garage Door Panel Replacement, from $445
-
A cracked glass panel or a kinked aluminum rail on a full-view door
We price the section or glass repair from photos, then rebalance the door, because a glass section is heavier than it looks. Garage Door Panel Replacement, from $445
-
A cable fraying on the side that takes the most weight
With spring tension released, we install a fresh cable on each side and inspect the bottom brackets and drums before winding back to balance. Garage Door Cable Replacement, from $185
Is a C.H.I. door better than a Clopay?
Neither name is better across the board; the build of the specific model matters more. The real differences are how the doors are sold, how you identify them, and how the carriage designs are made.
C.H.I. sells through dealers; Clopay sells through dealers and The Home Depot. A C.H.I. is identified by a four-digit model number that spells out its construction, while a newer Clopay is traced from the serial printed low on its bottom panel. Both offer polystyrene and polyurethane insulation.
For carriage looks, C.H.I. offers stamped steel and overlays in steel, wood or fiberglass, while Clopay's Coachman and Canyon Ridge use composite overlays. Overlay doors from either maker weigh more, so the springs follow the model, not the logo.
Sizing springs for a heavy C.H.I. carriage door
An overlay carriage door outweighs a stamped door of equal size, so its springs must be sized to the scale, not to the opening. C.H.I. itself says the extra panels make these doors heavier.
Our first step is the scale: the door's weight sets the torsion springs, and the drums and cables have to suit it as well. On a river-facing lot in Washougal, where Gorge east wind pushes on wide doors, we also check the struts and the hinges on the top sections.
Questions from C.H.I. Overhead owners
Where can I find the model number on a C.H.I. garage door?
Check the original paperwork first, then look for a label on a section's interior face. C.H.I. model numbers are four digits, and on raised panel and stamped carriage doors the last two tell you the build. From a photo of the label, the panel style and one section edge, we can usually order the parts.
Can a single C.H.I. section be matched to the rest of my door?
Usually, if C.H.I. still makes the model and color. We order by model number, panel design, width, window style and color, and the four-digit number makes that order precise. On an older door the new section may look slightly brighter until it weathers, so we show you the color before installing.
Is a stamped or an overlay C.H.I. carriage house door lighter?
The stamped C.H.I. carriage house door, as a rule, because its pattern is pressed into the steel rather than applied on top. Overlay models from 5300 to 5800 add boards of steel, wood or fiberglass, which C.H.I. says makes them heavier, though the overlay material and insulation change the weight. Springs follow the measured weight either way.
Can you replace the glass in a C.H.I. full-view aluminum door?
Yes, by the section or the pane, depending on the damage. C.H.I. full-view doors use through-bolted aluminum rail and stile sections with frosted, obscure, plain or tinted glass. We price from photos of the crack and the section, and rebalance the door afterward, because glass sections are heavier than they look.
Which C.H.I. raised panel model is the warmest?
The 2216 and its long panel twin, the 4216, with 2 inches of polyurethane between two steel skins at R-17.19. The 2283 and 4283 use polystyrene between two skins at R-9.65, and the 2250 and 4250 are uninsulated single-skin steel. Warmer sections weigh more, so a door upgraded to a 2216 needs its springs resized.
