Hörmann around Clark County

Hörmann is a German door maker, in business since 1935 and based in Steinhagen. It entered North America in 2006 by buying GADCO, a sectional door builder in Montgomery, Illinois, then added Flexon, TNR Industrial Doors and Northwest Door, a Washington maker.

Hörmann sells its doors and openers through its own dealers and sends buyers to a dealer finder, so the paperwork for a Hörmann door here usually names the dealer that ordered it. That invoice is the fastest route to the exact model and factory color.

We have no tie to Hörmann or its dealers, and we treat its doors and openers like any make: springs wound for the weight on the scale, and sections matched to the door you already have.

Is it a Hörmann? How to check

Start with what the door is made of, then look for the hardware details Hörmann builds into its residential doors.

  • Joints between the sections shaped to keep fingers out as the door folds; Hörmann calls them FingerGuard and builds them into every residential model.
  • A heavy fixture on the bottom section where each lift cable attaches, which Hörmann describes as a safety fixture fitted to its doors.
  • Extruded aluminum trim on an aluminum face marks an Infinity Classic 7800; Extira composite trim over white marks a Clima Elite 5800.
  • On the ceiling, a belt-drive SilentDrive with 60 built-in LEDs, a PB3 wall console with a vacation lock and a four-button HSE4 mini transmitter.

Hörmann models in local garages

Hörmann's range here splits into two openers, steel doors, and carriage or wood doors, plus a few lines it sells only in the East.

Common Hörmann problems and repairs

Most Hörmann calls come down to one of these four, and each has its own repair page.

  • A carriage door section split or creased by a bumper or a bike rack

We photograph the design, overlays, color and windows, confirm Hörmann still builds that combination, and fit the section on a second visit. Garage Door Panel Replacement, from $445

  • One torsion spring snapped above a polyurethane or overlaid door

A thick core and composite trim make a heavy door. Both springs come off, and a new pair goes on, wound for the weight we measure rather than copied from the spring that broke. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $245

  • A SilentDrive turns back partway down or will not close

The EL201 safety beam or the Intelligent Motion Guard has stopped the door. We clean and align the beam, test the reversal against an obstruction, and look along the track for a rough spot the opener could read as one. Garage Door Safety Sensor Repair, from $125

  • A new car, keypad or extra remote to add to a SilentDrive

The HSE4 mini transmitter runs up to four doors, the lighted keypad is an add-on, and Hörmann lists HomeLink among the SilentDrive features. We pair each one and confirm the opener answers from the driveway. Garage Door Remote and Keypad Programming, from $105

Ordering one Hörmann section or a whole new door

One Hörmann section is worth ordering when three photos and the paperwork show the combination is still built and the color still reads true.

Custom colors from Hörmann's Galaxy Paint System and the long list of carriage combinations make the color check matter more on these doors. A Clima Elite painted on site after it was hung is the easier case, since it left the factory white and a new section can be painted to suit.

Keeping a SilentDrive working through a power cut

A SilentDrive runs through an outage only on its optional battery backup, which Hörmann rates for up to 18 hours or five cycles. That covers an evening, not an ice storm like February 2021, when many thousands in Clark County lost power.

Past that point the door runs by hand on the emergency release, and the springs decide how that goes. A balanced door rises with a steady pull and stays where you leave it; a door on a tired spring fights you the whole way, so have the balance checked before winter.

Questions from Hörmann owners

When did Northwest Door become part of Hörmann?

At the end of August 2015, according to a door industry trade newsletter that fall. It reported that Northwest Door would run as an independent company inside the Hörmann Group, with its leadership kept in place. Doors from those lines now sell under the Hörmann name, so one street can carry both labels.

What does the BluSecur app need to run a Hörmann SilentDrive?

A phone with Bluetooth in range of the opener, because BluSecur connects to the SilentDrive directly. Control from farther away, plus Apple Home, Alexa and Google voice control, comes through the optional Wi-Fi gateway. Remotes, the PB3 wall console and a keypad all keep working whether the app is connected or not.

How can I tell which Hörmann door model is on my garage?

Start with the material, then the paperwork. Woodgrain steel with raised panels points to the Pro Tech, Therma Tech or Clima Tech lines, aluminum overlays to an Infinity Classic, composite trim on white to a Clima Elite, and natural wood to a Heritage Classic or Builder Collection. The dealer invoice names the exact model.

Can one damaged section of a Hörmann door be replaced on its own?

Usually, while Hörmann still builds that model, design and window layout in a color that reads as a match. Carriage doors with many combinations and custom Galaxy colors need the closest look. Where the combination has been dropped, you see a full door price next to the section so the two can be compared.

How are springs sized for a heavy insulated Hörmann door?

From the door's measured weight, not the size of the old spring. A polyurethane core and composite overlays both add weight, so we weigh the door, wind a matched pair for that figure, and set the balance so the door holds still at halfway with the opener released. Both springs change together.

Is a Hörmann door built the same way as a Clopay?

Not exactly, though both makers build insulated steel doors with polystyrene or polyurethane cores. Hörmann puts FingerGuard pinch-resistant joints on every residential model, while Clopay sells Classic Steel in one, two or three layers and names a Safe-T-Bracket at the bottom. Compare section thickness, core and R-value on each spec sheet rather than the badge.
