TorqueMaster springs and the rest of a Wayne Dalton door

On Wayne Dalton doors around Vancouver, WA and the wider county, we replace TorqueMaster springs, convert the system to standard torsion when that makes more sense, and handle the cables, drums, sections and openers around it.

Wayne Dalton around Clark County

What sets a Wayne Dalton apart on a Clark County service call is its counterbalance: steel models such as the 9100, 9405 and 9600 were offered with the TorqueMaster, Wayne Dalton's own spring system.

Instead of springs wound onto a bare shaft above the door, a TorqueMaster's springs ride inside the tube itself, out of the weather, and they are tensioned at the end brackets rather than with winding bars at a cone. Wayne Dalton is a door brand of Overhead Door Corporation, which Sanwa Holdings wholly owns.

We work on Wayne Dalton doors independently of the brand's own sales and service locations: TorqueMaster spring and cable work, conversions to standard torsion, sections, rollers and the openers hung on these doors.

Is it a Wayne Dalton? How to check

On a Wayne Dalton the header tells you more than any logo, because a TorqueMaster looks nothing like an open torsion spring.

  • A steel tube across the header with a cable drum at each end and no coil in sight. The springs are inside that tube.
  • End brackets carrying warning tags, and on TorqueMaster Plus doors a ratchet wheel and pawl inside the end bracket where the spring is wound.
  • Spring turns written on an end bracket warning tag, as Wayne Dalton tells installers to do.
  • A 9100, 9405 or 9600 model number on the door paperwork; Wayne Dalton offered these models with TorqueMaster Plus in single and double spring versions.
  • An iDrive Pro opener, which Wayne Dalton listed for use only with its TorqueMaster 9000 series doors.

Wayne Dalton models common in Vancouver and Clark County
ModelSoldWhat to know
9100 with TorqueMaster PlusNot publishedSteel door with foam-insulated sections in single and double spring TorqueMaster Plus versions. A separate Wayne Dalton manual covers the 9100 on standard torsion, so we look at the header before ordering springs.
9405 with TorqueMaster PlusNot publishedShares the TorqueMaster Plus instructions with the 9100 and 9600. Each spring is marked right or left hand on its perch, and the pair must go back the same way.
9600 with TorqueMaster PlusNot publishedInsulated steel on the TorqueMaster Plus system, wound in tenths of a turn at the end brackets to a turn count set by door height and weight.
8300Not publishedA Wayne Dalton door with a standard torsion manual: open springs on a shaft, wound with bars at the cones.
Earlier in-tube counterbalanceNot publishedWayne Dalton's 1995 patent for the in-tube system shows a self-locking geared winder at each end, unlike the Plus ratchet.
Classicdrive, Prodrive, Quantum and iDrive openersNot publishedWayne Dalton's own opener lines. We test the motor, logic board and photo eyes before quoting a repair.

Common Wayne Dalton problems and repairs

TorqueMaster faults show up differently from open-spring faults, so here is how each one looks and what we do about it.

  • The door suddenly feels very heavy, yet no broken coil is visible

A TorqueMaster spring breaks inside the tube, out of sight. We confirm it by the lift and the slack cables, release any remaining tension at the end brackets, slide new springs in perch end first, and wind them to Wayne Dalton's turn chart. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $245

  • A lift cable jumped its drum and one side hangs low

We unload the springs at the end brackets before touching the cable, then rewrap it in the first and second drum grooves as Wayne Dalton specifies and check the other side. Garage Door Cable Replacement, from $185

  • The door still binds after new springs

Wayne Dalton's troubleshooting points at the spring tube and flag angles being out of level and plumb. We re-level the tube, square the flag angles and tracks, then recheck balance. Garage Door Track Repair, from $165

  • A dented section on a 9100 or 9600

We identify the model, design and color, order a section where one is still made, and reset the spring turns. Garage Door Panel Replacement, from $445

How a TorqueMaster differs from an open torsion spring

Both lift the door through cables wound on drums, but they are built, wound and serviced differently.

Wayne Dalton's patent puts the idea plainly: torsion springs inside the drive tube, so they are not exposed to the weather, with tension set from the ends. In a Camas or Washougal garage that stays damp through the rainy months, that shelter keeps rust off the coils.

The trade-off is service: the springs are made for the tube, the break is hidden, and the winder is its own design.

Should you convert a TorqueMaster to standard torsion?

Convert when the tube, drums or end brackets are worn along with the springs, or when you want springs any supplier can wind; keep the TorqueMaster when only the springs failed and the rest of the hardware is sound.

A conversion swaps the tube for a torsion shaft, adds a center bearing plate, a bearing plate at each end, new drums and two open springs matched to the door's weight. The door itself stays, and future springs can come from any spring supplier.

Matching a Wayne Dalton section on a newer Camas street

A matching section starts with the model number, then panel style, color and window layout. More than half of Camas homes date from 2000 on, and where an HOA governs door style and color, the match must pass a neighbor's eye.

A new section can weigh a little more or less than the one it replaces. On a TorqueMaster door the spring turns are set to the door weight, so we check balance and adjust the turns after the section goes up.

Questions from Wayne Dalton owners

How can I tell if a TorqueMaster spring on my Wayne Dalton door is broken?

The door turns very heavy and the lift cables go slack, because the break itself is hidden inside the tube. You may also have heard a bang from the header. Stop using the opener and text us pictures of the header and door so we bring the right springs.

Can I wind a Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster spring myself?

We would not, and Wayne Dalton's own manuals point to the warning tags on both end brackets for that reason. The springs store enough energy to injure, the instructions say tension must be fully released before any hardware comes off, and the turn count has to suit the door. A wrong count leaves the door drifting or dropping.

Can a Wayne Dalton opener still be repaired?

Often, yes, when the motor, logic board and photo eyes test well. Wayne Dalton opener lines include Classicdrive, Prodrive, Quantum and iDrive, each with its own manual. The iDrive Pro was listed only for TorqueMaster 9000 series doors, so if you replace one, we confirm the new opener suits your counterbalance first.

Can one dented section on a Wayne Dalton 9100 be replaced?

Yes, if your model's section is still in production. We order it by model, design, color and width, fit it, then recheck the spring turns, because the TorqueMaster is tuned to the door weight. If the design is gone, we compare the nearest current design with a new door.

Can a Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster be converted to standard torsion springs?

Yes. The conversion replaces the TorqueMaster tube with a standard torsion shaft, a center bearing plate, end bearing plates, new drums and two open springs sized to the door's weight. It pays off when the tube, drums or end brackets are worn as well, and afterward any spring supplier can match future springs.
