Clopay around Clark County
Clopay doors reach Clark County garages through two routes. Clopay's locator lists more than 3,000 independent dealers alongside The Home Depot stores, so one Clopay may have come from an installer's catalog while the house next door got its door from a store order.
Clopay is a door brand of Griffon Corporation, which calls itself the largest provider of residential garage doors in North America. Its range runs from one-layer steel to composite carriage designs and real wood, so two Clopay doors on one block can differ a lot.
We work on Clopay doors as an independent repair shop. We fix the door that is already hanging, order sections through supply where Clopay still builds the model, and size springs to the weight the door carries today rather than the weight printed on an old invoice.
Is it a Clopay? How to check
Start low on the garage side of the door, where Clopay puts the serial number, then read the panels, windows and springs.
- A 15 or 16 digit serial number on the inside face of the bottom section, which traces the exact model on doors made in about the last ten years.
- Classic Steel panel styles: Traditional panels with no edging on one and two layer doors, Elegant panels with decorative edging on three layer doors. Gallery Steel shows grooved carriage-style panels instead.
- Composite overlays fastened over steel sections, the sign of a Coachman or Canyon Ridge carriage house door built on insulated steel.
- Insert windows with Clopay design names such as Colonial, Charleston, Stockton, Madison or Prairie on a Classic Steel door.
- On a single door ordered through a retail chain, extension springs running above the horizontal tracks; on a retail double wider than 10 feet, an EZ-Set torsion system on the header.
Clopay models in local garages
Each of these Clopay lines is on Clopay's current list, and each is built differently enough to change the section we order and the spring we wind.
| Model | Sold | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Steel | Current | One, two or three layers of steel, with polystyrene or Intellicore polyurethane on insulated versions and R-values up to 18.4. The layer count changes the door weight, and the door weight sets the spring. |
| Gallery Steel | Current | Grooved carriage-style panels in short or long patterns, one to three layers, R-6.5 to R-18.4. Clopay includes it in its Home Depot product brochure, so it turns up on store orders as well as installer jobs. |
| Coachman | Current | Woodgrain composite overlays on insulated steel, 15 designs in four series. Clopay places restrictions on Coachman replacement sections, so availability is the first thing we check. |
| Canyon Ridge Carriage House, 4-layer and 5-layer | Current | Faux wood composite cladding over an insulated steel core. The cladding adds weight compared with plain steel, which shows up in the spring wire we choose. |
| Modern Steel and Avante | Current | Flush and printed plank steel, plus Avante aluminum and glass, where a cracked pane or bent rail means a new section. |
| Reserve Wood and Classic Wood | Current | Real wood doors. Reserve Limited Edition uses a polystyrene-insulated hemlock frame with a luan backer at R-5.9, and Clopay advises a fresh finish at intervals of one to two years, sooner on exposed doors. |
Common Clopay problems and repairs

-
One extension spring snapped on a single door
We replace extension springs as a matched pair sized to the door weight, with a safety cable threaded through each one. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $245
-
A store-ordered door on extension springs that you would rather have on torsion
Where headroom and the header allow it, we fit a torsion shaft, drums, bearing plates and springs sized for the door, and remove the extension hardware. Extension to Torsion Spring Conversion, from $495
-
A section dented by a bumper or a basketball
We read the serial number, order the matching section through supply while Clopay still makes the model, and hang it on a second visit with fresh hinges on that section. Garage Door Panel Replacement, from $445
-
A lift cable frayed at a rusty bottom bracket
With the spring tension taken off, we fit two new cables and a new bracket, check the drums for wear, then wind the springs back and rebalance. Garage Door Cable Replacement, from $185
-
Rollers chattering and hinges cracking on an older insulated door
We swap worn rollers for sealed nylon ones and replace cracked hinges by hinge number, which quiets the door and takes strain off the opener. Garage Door Roller and Hinge Replacement, from $195
Can you still get a matching Clopay section?
Usually, if Clopay still builds your model. The serial number on the bottom section tells the supplier which door you have, and we order through that channel because Clopay sells parts only through its distribution network.
Color is the catch. Clopay warns that a new section may not match a weathered door exactly. In a Felida or Salmon Creek tract where HOA rules govern door style and color, we send the design, window pattern and color name with the quote so the board can weigh in before anything is ordered.
When the model is no longer made, the choice is the closest current section from the same family or a new door. We price both and say which we would pick.
Why a heavier Clopay door needs different springs
A three-layer Clopay with polyurethane, or a Coachman or Canyon Ridge under composite cladding, weighs noticeably more than a one-layer door of the same size. Clopay itself says sizing takes the door weight, height and track layout.
With the springs unloaded, we put the door on a scale, then pick the wire size, coil diameter and spring length that carry it for the cycle life you want. A door that gained insulation or a heavier section after it was hung needs that check too.
What a store-ordered Clopay means for the hardware
A Clopay bought through a retail chain usually arrives with springs picked for straightforward installation: extension springs on single doors and EZ-Set torsion on doors over 10 feet wide, by Clopay's own account.
EZ-Set extension springs need about 5-1/2 inches of side room against 3-3/4 inches for standard springs. In a garage where shelving or a water heater crowds the jamb, that extra width matters, and it is one reason we sometimes price a torsion conversion instead of another set of extension springs.
Questions from Clopay owners
Where is the model information on a Clopay garage door?
Look on the inside face of the bottom section for a 15 or 16 digit serial number. On doors made in roughly the last ten years, Clopay can trace the exact model from it, including design, layers and color. Text us a clear photo of the number along with the whole door, and the section or parts lookup can start before we arrive.
Can I replace just one dented section of my Clopay door?
Yes, as long as Clopay still makes your model. The section is ordered by model, width, design and color, then hung on a return visit with its hinges and rollers moved over or renewed. On an older door expect a slight color difference, which Clopay itself warns about, and note that Coachman sections carry extra restrictions.
What is the difference between Intellicore and polystyrene in a Clopay door?
Intellicore is Clopay's polyurethane insulation, and it reaches higher R-values than the polystyrene option in the same line, up to 18.4 on insulated steel doors. A lower R-value can be enough for a detached garage where heat loss matters little, a point Clopay makes itself.
Why did the springs on my heavier Clopay door wear out early?
Usually because they were sized for a lighter door or for fewer cycles than the household uses. Clopay figures about 1,500 cycles a year for an average door, which runs a standard 10,000 cycle spring out in six or seven years. Heavier three-layer and overlay doors need larger wire, and high-cycle springs stretch the interval.
Does a Clopay door from Home Depot come with torsion springs?
Not always: Clopay says retail single-car doors generally ship with extension springs, while two-car doors over 10 feet wide get EZ-Set torsion springs. Professional installers pick the spring for the site instead. If your single door runs on extension springs, we can replace them as a pair with safety cables or price a torsion conversion.
